This estimates outlet flow at the time of your test. It does not measure circulation in every part of the aquarium. Filter condition, media, head height, hose routing and measurement accuracy can affect the result. Match flow to your livestock and aquarium setup.

How to measure your aquarium filter’s real outlet flow
Place the filter outlet over a measured container and collect the water for a timed interval without allowing the filter to run dry. Ten seconds is convenient for many setups, while a longer test can reduce the effect of stopwatch error. Enter the collected volume and test duration above to estimate hourly outlet flow.
The filter flow formula
Convert the collected water to the output unit before multiplying to an hourly rate. Metric: mL collected ÷ 1,000 ÷ test seconds × 3,600 = L/h. US: US fl oz collected ÷ 128 ÷ test seconds × 3,600 = GPH. Example: 1,000 mL (1.0 L) collected in 10 seconds equals approximately 360 L/h.
Why measured flow can differ from the rating
Manufacturer ratings may be measured under different test conditions. Installation height, hose length, tight bends, valves, filter media and debris can affect the outlet flow delivered by a working aquarium setup. A lower measurement does not automatically mean the filter is faulty.
Outlet flow is not the same as whole-tank circulation
This tool measures water leaving the filter. Rocks, wood and dense plants can redirect that water and create quieter areas inside the aquarium. Match circulation to livestock comfort, plant mass, oxygenation and the layout rather than chasing one universal turnover number.

How often should I test filter flow?
Test after installation to create a baseline, then repeat when the outlet visibly slows, after changing hose routing or media, and after maintenance. Comparing results under similar conditions is more useful than one isolated measurement.
What tank volume should I use for turnover?
Use estimated real water volume after accounting for the waterline, substrate, hardscape and equipment. If you do not know it, use the DaraSphere Aquarium Tank Volume Calculator.
Is higher turnover always better?
No. Appropriate flow depends on the species you keep, the aquarium layout, plant density, oxygenation and how evenly water moves through the tank. Some livestock prefer gentler areas, so evaluate the circulation pattern as well as the hourly number.
