A desktop aquarium bowl looks portable, but its location affects temperature, algae, cleaning and the safety of everything around it. Choose the position while the container is empty; moving glass, water and hardscape together creates unnecessary risk.

Do not place the bowl beside a radiator, heater, kitchen appliance or hot computer exhaust. Air-conditioning vents and frequently opened exterior doors can produce cooling and evaporation. Separate water from electricity and paperwork

A beautiful desk position is a poor choice if every water change happens above a laptop, power strip or important documents. Leave a clear route between the bowl and the nearest safe working area. Arrange cables so they cannot pull against the frame or sit where spills collect.

• whether reflections or glare reduce the visual effect.
